 Window Latches
Window Latches

Each movable pane comes with two preinstalled safety latches. On a double hung tilt window, there are 4 locks total for maximum security. In the closed position, the locks bring the window closer to the frame and create a tight weather seal.

Annealed
Annealed Glass
Annealed glass is made using a slow cooling process to increase durability and prevent shattering. When it does break, it splits into sharp, irregular shaped pieces.
Tempered
Tempered Glass
Tempered glass goes through a controlled thermal process in manufacturing to change its structure. When it breaks, it fractures into small harmless fragments with relatively rounded edges.
Laminated
Laminated Glass
Laminated glass is composed of two or more layers of glass with an interlayer of plastic, providing resistance to shattering upon impact. When it breaks, the interlayer holds it together preventing fragment dispersal.

FAQ On Hung Windows

What is a Single hung window?

A single-hung window features two sashes, also called panels. The lower sash moves up and down and the upper sash remains stationary. When you open the window, the view of the top sash is partially covered, unlike a double-hung window where the upper and lower sashes can stay open simultaneously without obstructing the view.

What is double hung window?

Simply put, double-hung means you can open from the top or the bottom—versus “single-hung,” which only opens from the bottom. This means that homeowners seeking extra ventilation have a variety of options, and either half of the window can be opened if desired. Parents of small children appreciate having the ability to open the upper sash for ventilation while leaving the lower sash closed.

Double-hung windows are designed for convenience. On the modern types of double-hung windows, both sashes can tilt inward for cleaning purposes.

Difference between single hung and double hung windows:

Unlike a single-hung window, double-hung windows (not to be confused with double pane windows) contain upper and lower sashes that can both move vertically. This means you can move the top or bottom panel up or down allowing you to adjust how much of the breeze you’d like to invite in or keep out based on your preferences.

Another difference: double-hung windows tilt inward making them easier to clean from the inside. For most single-hung windows, you’d need to go outside or get a squeegee with a long handle to clean the exterior.

What are the PRO’s of the single hung windows?

They cost about 25% less then double hung. They are more energy efficient due to presence of a fixed sash; they also allow for easier removal of the bug screen and seasonal installation of a window A/C unit.

What are the PRO’s of the double hung windows?

Double hung windows offer more ventilation options as opposed to the single hung windows that can be opened at the bottom only. You not only have the option to open the top instead of the bottom, but you can also open both panels halfway at the same time to create a recirculating effect. Opening your window like this will, in theory when the air inside is much hotter than the ambient, allow warm air from the home to escape outside while simultaneously allowing fresh air from outside to come in.

Both sash of a double-hung windows tilt inside, which means you can wash them both standing inside easier than if the top was fixed like in a single hung window.

Are hung windows secure?

Modern Single and Double Hung windows both are made to be incredibly safe and are designed to be structurally sound. The windows themselves are made with thick, strong glass that is double pane or triple pane. This makes it very difficult for the window to be broken. The locks on the windows are also very secure and incredibly difficult to break into when the window is locked. However, if you don’t close the upper sash properly on double-hung windows, gravity can pull the pane down in the frame—meaning it won’t lock. A simple test to ensure it’s properly locked should be enough to prevent security risks.

Which window is more energy efficient Single Hung vs Double Hung?

Single-hung windows are more energy-efficient than double-hung because they allow less air infiltration. Since only one window sash opens, there’s less of a chance that air will escape.

When should I choose single-hung windows?

  • Single-hung windows are better suited to lower floors since they typically require less ventilation due to heat rising to the upper floors.
  • It is also easier to clean single-hung windows when you can stand on the ground or patio to clean them from the outside.
  • If you want to absolutely maximize your home’s energy efficiency, you should choose a single-hung window. Since they have fewer moving parts, they can be slightly more efficient than double-hung.
  • Choose single-hung windows if you want a more affordable option when buying replacement windows.

When should I choose double-hung windows?

  • Choose double-hung windows if you want to maximize ventilation on the upper floors of your home.
  • Double-hung windows tend to be easier to clean since they often have tilt latches that allow you to open the bottom and top sashes from inside your home.
